My Top 3 Fish of Australia

I have always loved fishing and most importantly being able to enjoy a delicious meal from my catch. What a Great reward!

I have caught and tasted many differtent species of fish on my travels around Australia, so these are my Top 3 BEST eating fish.

1.Barramundi - is described in the aboriginal language of the Rock-Hampton Area in QLD meaning “Large Scaled River Fish.” This is white fatty soft fleshed fish with very good eating not many bones & not very smelly. You might see this in your local fish & chip shop too. Barramundi live in estuaries, freshwater and saltwater in northern waters of Australia the catch size is 55-85cm, the bag limit is 1-2 bags. Each state varies in their catch size and the bag limit. (you can always check this with your local council.) During certain seasons you cannot catch & keep Barramundi as it’s illegal to catch them whilst their in spawning season.

2. Snapper - The snapper is a prize fish that is found in the coastal waters of Australia and New Zealand. Snapper is a great looking fish and fantastic eating and is prized for the fight it puts up. The snapper also has other names such as pinky, knobby, big red and rugger. The common size for the snapper is between 30 and 90cm and they have a lifespan of up to 40 years. I am yet to catch a snapper and enjoy a delish feast, this is definitely on my "catch list" so stay tuned.

#snappertip1 - Snapper fishing tip for the best catch I recommend using a large circle hook and a star sinker you can get these at your local tackle store.

3. Spanish Mackerel : Spanish Mackerel have torpedo shaped bodies their tail fins have a incredibly a narrow shape. This helps the fish move swiftly through the water. In Western Australia May-June is the best time to catch Spanish Mackerel, although they can also be caught all summer and larger specimens are sometimes caught in winter. The Minimum size for a spanish Mackerel is minimum 90cm and the bag limit is 3 statewide. The Spanish Mackerel is a game fish, known for it fight but super worth it as it’s one of my favourite eating fish. This fish is preferred to eat fresh as it is a oily fish with a high source of Omega 3, which can spoil if left too long after the catch.

#mackerelfishrecipe - The simple the better for this fish, lightly salt and pepper the fillet, flour and fry in oil for a few minutes then enjoy. I recommend a cucumber salad on the side.

I hope that you have learned something new and that I have hopefully inspired you to get out to the beach, a boat, or your local jetty and try your best on your next catch. Fishing can be such a relaxing and rewarding hobby so get out there and have some fun.

Until next time, happy fishing.
