Exploring the Octopus Cape Keraudren NP

Fact #1

Did you know that The oldest known octopus fossil belongs to an animal that lived 296 million years ago, during the Carboniferous period. Octopus arms have a mind of their own. They have an extensive nervous system and some scientists say they have 9 mini brains this means their arms can work independently they can taste, smell, feel and problem solve. Octopus are fascinating creatures they can handle so many different terrains which means they are very adaptable.

I know this because whilst exploring the coasts on my travels i was fortunate enough to swim with these amazing creatures in the Ningaloo Coast as well as catch them in the East Pilbara Region of WA.

Cape Keraudren National Park.

A place we visited and camped in Cape Keraudren NP was known for its abundant marine life including a place to catch plenty of octopus. When Mum and Dad told me this, well i was in! lets catch us some octopus.

Located at the start of 80 mile beach we where lucky enough to get a camp spot right on the water for two nights, so we un-hitched set up camp and went off to explore the sand banks that stretched out for miles. The tides in this region are very vast in this case it was about 6m so that meant when it went out.... it REallY went out.

This exposed all the rocks, rock pools and sea coral for us to explore. We had a huge area that was home to so many marine species like Coral, Sea anemones, Sea slugs, Little fish, starfish and to our surprise OCTOPUS!

Fact #2

Did you know that a octopus change color by using its pigment cells which are under the octopus skin and that’s how a octopus can camouflage themselves from their predators and keep safe.

So initially we couldn't see the octopus as it was so well camouflaged against the sand and rocks but when we stood close to them they revealed there body. We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring in out and around rock-pools, lifting rocks and catching octopus.

One of the coolest things about Octopus is if one of there tentacles fall off it actually grows back...YEP that's right, and the tentacle that falls off can move, smell and taste all by itself, Amazing isn't it? Would you believe that this happened when we where catching them, sounds creepy but is pretty cool to see in person. The Tentacles also stick to your skin like a suction cup and yes you guessed this happened too, its feels super weird i had to get dad help me remove them before i turned into an octopus. (laugh)

With only 2 days camped up at Cape Keraudren it felt like we had explored this beach over a week. Between all of the kids we ended up catching 20 octopus! It was a great experience and equally amazing how so much fun can teach you so much facts.
